As a huge fan of the show
Gossip Girl and an even bigger fan of Ed Westwick (come on he does slimy Chuck Bass perfectly, but in real life he has the most gorgeous British accent, delish!) I realize the guy must be very secure in himself to walk the runway in a skirt, or a kilt actually. Now I have a very sexy Scottish cousin who sports a kilt (the Murray clan to be exact) with pride so I know that the kilt happens to be more complicated than some people realize. It wraps around, it comes with accessories and if not worn right you might be showing more of your bits and pieces than you'd like. So props to Ed. But why, you ask, is he sporting this tan and beige ensemble down the catwalk? For the 7th Annual "Dress to Kilt" Charity Fashion Show hosted by one of everyones favorite Scots, Sir Sean Connery. Ed was joined on the runway by other celebs (both Scots and non-Scots alike) like Andie MacDowell, Bernie Williams, Mike Meyers and even Miss Scotland Stephanie Willemse. The event, hosted by Friends of Scotland, kicks off Tartan Week here in New York City and goes to raise money for Paralysed Veterans of America, the Wounded Warriors Organisation and the Erskine Hospital in Scotland. Not bad. Braveheart would be proud.

Im straight male and wear short skirt (mainly denim, velvet and cord mini skirt) – love it, I usual wear tights, and mini skirt with either flat shoes or calf boots or knee boots – it just normal clothes for men to wear skirt – trousers are so boring as it always same so it need change new fashion for men to mixed like jeans plus dresses, skirts, etc, problems for me is men size which is too big for me as Im suffered from weight loss so wear jeans for my work and wear tights and mini skirt at home or anywhere else that give me nice cool. Men can wear skirt as it allow, no law against.
I am going with the new fashion trend for men, finally something different to wear.
It is sad that we have to discuss if it is appropriate for men to wear skirts and dresses. Did we discuss was is appropriate to wear for women? It’s a pitiful sign of in-equality of sexes. And some men and women do not see the reality what is really going on with that.
Of course, men can wear skirts and dresses, and I am not looking in the past when they did it, just use a little bit common sense and everybody knows that there is no better wardrobe available which fits best for males body shape. So, why the questions? What is more important, health and comfort in contrast to old fashion imagination? Can’t wait to see some answers to my question.
Martin
I have to say that I really like the look. I hope this catches on. It would please me to be able to wear a skirt, or even a dress, in public without feeling like everyone was staring at me strangely.
Martin is right: Traditional (at least what has been called “traditional”) mens clothing is just too boring. Threre is no variety, all men look exactly the same. It’s like, hey, are we supposed to be in uniform or something? Why can’t we wear something different? Why does it always have to be trousers with shirt, jacket and tie (for dress). Sheesh! We all look the same! Give me a break. But not one woman looks like another. There is so much variety in their wardrobe.
There is only so much you can do with pants and a shirt. Change the color, the fabric, etc, but it’s still the same. Blahhhh.
Bill, you’re right. A huge collection of pants, same style, fabric and color, it is just amazing why men always using the same stuff.
For women even all pants are different in style, lenght, fabric, color, pattern. And skirts? There are a million different style available, the wearer makes the difference within combinations with other wardrobe, color of stockings and even the shoes make a huge difference. So, why not more men taking adavantage and going with skirts. Shall I ask about dresses, even more options for a wardrobe?
“Manly men wearing skirts” I did read somewhere, now I have to ask: Where are you, manly men?
People will go to lengths to prevent change. We have an entire class of people calling themselves “mental health professionals” ready at an instant to yell “transvestite” at any man who dares assert a right to choice. This group earlier called for women in pants to be “treated with the usual remedies in use at the best conducted hospitals for the insane” NY Times May 27, 1876, page 6 editorial, “A Curious Disease” In junior high a social worker told me I was mentally ill because I had on a black sock and a dark brown sock! Meantime Greece has soldiers in flippy pleated skirts that look so nice (and they ARE killers.)
Yes, Charles I think there might people around calling themselve mental health professionals. I never would call me another profession then I am, and I am a little bit proud that I could reach the highest degree at the university but never I would judge a person. I know about a disease (fol…) we try to find a way to treat , but we’re not very successful.
As I said in a comment before, it is a question about common sense. And there is no other garment than a skirt or dress which could fit a male body better. Pants are one of the most impratical clothes for men’s body shape.
Martin; It is interesting that you support men’s skirts. I admire that because there are not so many men around doing like you.
I also support men in skirts, I support changes by men and women when they are positive. And definitley skirts for men are positive regarding their body shape. I also learned that men looking fabulous in skirts, for sure much more handsome than in pants. Variability is enormous for men too, it’s healthy and it does fit men perfectly. What more positive things are waiting for men?
I think this picture shows that men can wear skirts and it looks amazing to me. Great choice what goes together. Can’t see the shoes but I think they are also fine.
Summary: Men made a big step forward in a positive way.
Lucky09;
You are doing fine when wearing clothing as described. I always have to ask myself why men so afraid wearing somesting else than pants.
With wearing skirts men have many more possibilities to change their outfit, makes them much more interesting. I know that skirts are not just womens wardrobe, but how men know that too?
Skirts have to be one of the best kept secrets from the guys! Once you try one you will be hooked!
A skirt obviously makes more sense for the male anatomy than for a female. (No crotch binding seams for the first time ever…). Remember… a Kilt IS a Skirt by definition. Kilts are usually ugly, heavy and very costly yet there are many women’s skirts that work perfectly for guys without modifications. Check E-Bay for “Cargo Mini Skirts” in Juniors sizes. (The hips are not too big). Don’t be surprised by the mini skirts recommendation…they are the same length as men’s gym shorts (Avg around 12″ long) and a micro mini is the same length as men’s running shorts so there is not much of a transition). Quality skirts are available on E-May for as little as $1.00 so price is not an excuse.
Finally… a man in a skirt will still look like a man just as women look like women when wearing pants. The key here is people will know he is a man without homophobic tendencies. (Men and women who are not sure in their sexuality will put down the idea of skirts for men). Proof guys can pull it off check these images: Click images here to see for yourself: http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/browse/Patagoniakidd
I wear a tartan mini kilt around home all the time. Great in late spring and summer. Wife says it is good, no problems with neighbours either. Don’t see what the fuss is about. Better and more comfortable at 35+ deg.
