The Hat Trend Keeps On Going

Thursday May 15, 2008

The other day we saw Sarah Jessica Parker wearing an extravagant enormous hat complete with butterflies and a big bold flower. But that wasn't the end of this eye-catching trend. Today at the launch of her new perfume, Can-Can, Paris Hilton sported a fabulous white hat perched on the side of her sassy blond bob. Paris' hat was reminiscent of old Hollywood hats and included a net and oversized flowers. It was a little more wearable than SJP's, although I still wouldn't recommend it for a night out. Are hats going to become the new "IT" accessory on the red carpet? I understand it at the Kentucky Derby -- it's an old tradition -- but at modern day red carpet events? Are Versace and Prada going to go into the millinery business? Will Louboutin start making hats with a red underside? I am interested to see if other Hollywood trendsetters will follow this trend or if it's really just for the risktakers among us.

Chloe Goes High-Waisted And I Love It

Wednesday May 14, 2008

One of my favorite looks of the season is the high-waisted skirt -- high-waisted pencil, poofy, mini, anything as long as it's a skirt. I am hoping this means the death of low-rise. No more thongs peaking out where they shouldn't, bye-bye to muffin tops escaping from underneath a skimpy tank and forget gasping in horror when someone flashes you something that only their toilet should see (sorry for the totally graphic image!). What is so fabulous about the high-waisted skirt is that it has a very polished and sophisticated look. Take fashion darling (daring?) Chloe Sevigny. Look beyond her old-man glasses to her dazzling red carpet style. Her tiered skirts draws eyes to her slender waist and gives Chloe some sexy feminine curves. Plus, she tucks in the graphic top so it doesn't have an overwhelming feel on the eyes. For once Chloe hits the nail on the head...good job!

Team Leighton!

Wednesday May 14, 2008

If you didn't know already I love the CW's hit show, Gossip Girl. I love it for the intrigue, the amazing outfits, the teenage drama, but most of all I love it for Leighton Meester's devilishly bitchy femme fatale with a heart, Blair Waldorf. Every time Leighton is on-screen, she steals the shot, whether it's with her far better acting or her amazing wardrobe or her witty comebacks, but she is just far and away the best one in the cast (besides the charming and rakish Ed Westwick). Now I know most of the media circus surrounding the show usually falls on Blake Lively or Chace Crawford, but to me it's all about Leighton. Even her red carpet persona takes the cake. Just look at the dress she sported yesterday to the CW Upfronts...the back is fabulous and somehow she looks 5-foot-10 even though she is a petite 5-foot-4. Talk about knowing how to work it. Plus, my favorite Leighton fact is that to join the GG cast she dyed her naturally blond hair dark brown! Now that's knowing how to get things done. And apparently the brown hair suits her. People Magazine just named her one of their 100 Most Beautiful People in the World. Team Leighton!

Bush Gets Married...Jenna That Is

Tuesday May 13, 2008

For anyone trapped under a rock, here's some news: Jenna Bush, one of the twin daughters of President Bush, got married this weekend. The lucky guy was her longtime sweetheart and former aide to Karl Rove, Henry Hager. They chose to marry at the Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas as opposed to the White House to avoid the public eye...I won't go there. Anyway! To me it always seems celebrities and famous people who get married always choose the most ostentatious dresses -- giant poofy things embroidered with crystals and diamonds just because they can, and to be honest, that is never a good look. Isn't the saying less is more? Jenna, on the other hand, chose the most beautiful and simple Oscar de la Renta (no one said cheap) organza gown. No poof, no fuss, just simple and elegant. The V-cut wasn't too deep (she does have her modesty...for the day) and the design hugged her body in a curve-skimming way, but not too sexy. All together it was a perfect choice. Now if only the other Bushes were prone to making good decisions...

Is That A Hat On Sarah Jessica's Head?

Tuesday May 13, 2008

For all of you waiting with bated breath for the premiere of the Sex and the City movie bad news...it happened last night in London! I am not sure why a film that uses New York City as its fifth star would choose to premiere somewhere else, but it did and the ladies were out in full fashion force. So far the film has been receiving mixed reviews, but I don't trust critics anyway, especially with a movie as hyped as SATC. Plus, don't worry, this post won't hold any spoilers for you all, dear readers.

What it will hold is my confusion on what is growing on Sarah Jessica Parker's head at the premiere last night. Is that a hat? Is that a potted plant? Did Matthew Broderick give her flowers she just couldn't bear to be without? Yes, the colors go well with her dress and her skin tone, but on her head? SJP has always been one to take fashion risks -- a giant flower pin here, a short skirt to the Golden Globes, but this is a foot-high bouquet on her head. I just have so many questions to ask her! Did she have to practice her balance with that before the red carpet? Was it heavy all night? How was it attached? Am I the only one who thinks this "hat" is odd? Maybe, maybe not. Everyone is so used to her risqué fashions that maybe no one bats an eye anymore!

I just noticed that there are giant butterflies on SJP's "hat". So now I've realized that she has a nature scene growing on her head...interesting.

Cameron Goes Brown...again

Monday May 12, 2008
Right on the heels of the premiere of her movie What Happens In Vegas... Cameron Diaz has once again gone from her signature bright blond locks to a more demure honey brown. Cameron isn't one of those stars afraid to experiment with her signature look. Yes, she is known for her bubbly, blond surfer-girl appeal, but the star definitely has gone through a series of styles through the years. Even in the past couple of years she has sported several different cuts and colors, including a dark, dark brown shade, which brought out her sparkling blue eyes. But now, as she promotes her movie, is this really the right time to change it up? And is this really Cameron's best color? Obviously, she would be gorgeous bald or with really bad hair -- hello, Being John Malkovich! But that doesn't mean go for it! What do you think of Cameron's choice?

Paris Helps You Grow Your Hair...Instantly

Thursday May 8, 2008

What's a stylish girl to do? One minute long hair is in, then short and then long again! For celebrities it is easy. Get fabulous, and pretty realistic-looking hair extensions. But for us mere mortals hair extensions can be pricey, and the affordable ones just don't cut it. They look chintzy and fake. Paris Hilton to the rescue. The Queen of Fake Hair (well, Paris, Jessica Simpson and half of Hollywood) is launching her own line of hair extensions with Sally Beauty, the largest retailer of professional beauty supplies. Unlike other hair extensions, Paris's Dream Catchers Clipin-Go line easily clips into your hair without any glues, waxes or weaves...wait, hair extensions usually use glues and waxes? EW! But here is the ultimate question. Forget the no wax or glue...do you really want to look like Paris Hilton?

Patricia Field Does Diet Coke Bottles

Wednesday May 7, 2008

When you think of fabulous designer Patricia Field you normally associate her with the hit show, and now movie, Sex and the City, especially with the movie only weeks away. You think of fanciful dresses, interesting color combos and Carrie's oversized flower pins. But the never-boring designer is putting her talents to a new test -- Diet Coke Bottles! Field has designed four limited-edition DC bottles -- all bold, bright and colorful -- to sell exclusively at Selfridges, the popular London department store. According to Field, "The ‘diet Coke’ City Collection captures today's modern women, confidant, glamorous, sexy and more in charge of their own lives, and represents the areas of life that are most important to them such as: ‘career’, ‘passion’, ‘love’ and ‘fashion’." Plus, the bottles used are the original glass bottles that everyone loves so much. Talk about refreshing!

Each bottle has its own meaning. The red bottle represents passion, the gold bottle means career, the turquoise bottle stands for fashion (yeah!) and the pink bottle means loves. Which color would you choose (and feel free to pick more than one...I did!)

Tonight's The Night: The Met Costume Institute Gala

Monday May 5, 2008
Once a year, celebrities and the entire fashion world gather at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art for one of the most fabulous and glamorous nights of the year: The Met's Costume Institute Gala. Last year the red carpet was awash with everyone from Gisele Bundchen to Jessica Simpson to Cate Blanchett. I'm excited to see who walks the red carpet this year. Expect high-watt stars since George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Giorgio Armani are all chairing the event. In 2007 the celebs came out to celebrate Paul Poiret, a fashion visionary. This year's theme is Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy. Perfect timing with the release of movies like Iron Man, The Dark Knight, The Hulk and Hellboy II. Looks like Sex and the City won't be the only movie this summer influencing fashion!

PS. I just learned Christy Turlington will be wearing Escada tonight...more updates to come!

Hat Head Looks Good On Celebs

Sunday May 4, 2008

For some people the Kentucky Derby is all about horse racing and mint juleps, but for the fashionable it's all about the hats. The bigger the better. The more outrageous, the more fabulous the better. The Kentucky Derby is a fashion show of gorgeous hats for some of the most fashionable women in society. And at yesterday's running of the 134th Kentucky Derby we were not disappointed. There were some of the biggest, baddest hats we remember. Heidi Montag (ugh, The Hills, we know!) wore a big hot pink hat, Lee Ann Womack chose a black hat with a huge asymmetrical black-and-gray attachment and a personal favorite, Molly Sims wore this classic hat right out of My Fair Lady. For some women wearing hats is a throw-back to a a golden age, where women never even dreamed of wearing pants and afternoon tea was an everyday thing. Sounds good to me!
